Parque Anchorena - Grupo Ingles -



Anchorena’s Park is situated in La barra de San Juan in Colonia, in the West side of the province. It is 25 kilometers from the city center.


The presidential residence Anchorena Park is a park and holiday residence of the presidents of Uruguay.


It is a beautiful place, surrounded by magnificent nature . You can see a natural reserve including a spectacular variety of plants on animals.



History : The park is the legacy of Aaron Anchorena , with the specific destination to be dedicated to park for conservation, tourism and education and the retreat for the Uruguayan presidents.


The origin of the park dates back to 1907 when Anchorena, accompanied by his friend Jorge Newbery,went over the River Plate in a balloon called "El Pampero".


Anchorena was born on 5 November 1877. He traveled to Europe and Asia as a ship named "El Pampa". He planted and populated areas of Colonia, indroducing many animal and plant species. Among the species introduced axis deer from India, that was easily adapted to the Uruguayan territory.




Anchorena introduced a wide variety of species of plants and the Axis deer among other animals. Plant species include:

Cork


Araucaria


Arce


Bald Cypress


Eucalyptus over 50 varieties


Liquidambar


Creole Sauce




Anchorena died on 24 February 1965. The house was donated to the Uruguayan government according to Anchorena’s last will. The Uruguayan government accepted this legacy in 1968.
